Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
heheh
Nice one...
Melanie Anne Safka, that name ring a bell? Born in '47!? gosh I'm getting old! Such a beautiful hippie chick, and had so much more success than most people realize and remember.
Sang at the original Woodstock...The inspiration for her signature song "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set.
She was the first female performer to have three top 40 hits on the billboard charts simultaneously, "the Nickel Song" "Ring the Living Bell" and "Brand New Key" were all on the charts together.
From 1970 to 1981, she had 9 songs in the top 100, not bad at all.
And "Brand New Key" still gets a lot of airplay today, on the oldies stations

Wow, Can't believe it's been so long since I posted in this.
Kinda feels like rezzing lol.
Stumbled into an old Joe Cocker CD I had, and it put me to thinking. So you know what happens, other than the obvious headache.
Today, I pay tribute to Carl Radle...A man I never met, but feel like I should know. I worked for his 1st cousin in Rusk for close to 5 years, got an autographed pic of him from Bobby, (posthumously ) and a bit of his history. Carl played bass guitar, I love the bass, one of my favorite bassists was Leon Wilkeson of Skynyrd, just because he played bass, not just a beat once in a while...but I digress.
Carl wasnt a household name, but he sure enabled a lot of household names. His first professional appearance was with Gary Lewis and the Playboys (wow, long time since I heard that name) and he played with other notables such as Eric Clapton, Derek and the Dominoes (also a clapton band) got in a movie as the bass player for Joe Cocker on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. In fact, if you watch the movie, following the band around on and off stage, there is a shot in it, about halfway thru, where the cameraman walks thru the doorway of the bands room, and that's Carl, that's cleaning the big bag of weed on the coffee table LOL.
His resume includes working with Clapton, on all of Clapton's solo work from 74-79, Leon Russell, he played some with David Gates (who was also from Tulsa, as was Carl, and before Gates cofounded the group Bread)...
In 1980, the slim, quiet, eyeglass wearing Carl Radle died at age 37, from kidney failure brought on by alcohol abuse and drug abuse.
No Carl in this video, the famous piano player gets all the camera
The Letter
As usual, the bass players don't get much notice...
you can't see him much, but he does make the intro
Guess who
Anyway, not much video of him, unless ya sit down and watch the Mad Dogs movie

Jimmy Buffett fan here:)
I had 3-4 favorite Parrothead hits but after listening to the words of one of his songs, I have a new fave.
Opening lines are:
"I'm growing older, but not up ... "

have a cd of a group of very fine ladies covering some of Greg Brown's tunes..... Gillian Welch does this one on that album and it's very haunting, Greg makes it more fun
Summer Evening
Say this deal's about over, and I guess that's true,
Town used to have twelve stores, now we got two.
Big boys movin' in, small farmers movin' on.
The way may be goin', but the life ain't gone.
On a summer evenin' when the corn's head-high,
And there's more lightnin' bugs than stars in the sky.
Ah, you get the feelin' things may be alright,
On a summer evenin' before the dark of night.
Walked down by the river where my good fields are,
It's a dusty old road, but there ain't many cars.
Think about my wife, my daughter and my son,
If the good Lord's still lookin', the Lord's will be done.
But on a summer evenin' when the corn's head-high,
And there's more lightnin' bugs than stars in the sky.
Ah, you get the feelin' things may be alright,
On a summer evenin' before the dark of night.
Mmm, on a summer evenin' when the corn's head-high,
And there's more lightnin' bugs than stars in the sky.
Ah you get the feelin' things may be alright,
On a summer evenin' before the dark of night.

*sighs*
Even in the rural areas, there is no rural feel anymore...
How long since I walked thru the cornfield, or picked a purple hull pea...
How long since I sat on the footbridge across the creek, under the willows, and watched the sunset?
Too long.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Is it legal to use the words Mick Jagger and Bob Wills in the same sentence?
Never saw that done before!
