The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Vincent Furner was the son of a conservative Protestant minister, who at age 18 had a dream that he was the reincarnated spirit of a 16th century woman of that name who had been burned at the stake for witchcraft. He changed his name to that of the woman in his dream. Moved to Detroit, with his group, because they enjoyed the hard rocking street tough rocking atmosphere of the town at that time. One of their earliest publicity stunts was at the Eastown Ballroom, they threw live chickens into the crowd at the end of the concert, which were quickly killed and ripped to pieces by the frenzied crowd. The ensuing scandal and national publicity for it actually was the launch point for a career that continues to this day. So without further preamble, I present:
"Generation Landslide"
by Alice Cooper.
Please clean the plates, dear.
The Lord above can see ya.
Don't you know people are starving in Korea?
Alcohol and razor blades and poison and needles,
Kindergarten people - they use 'em, the need 'em.
Over-indulging machines were their children.
There wasn't a way down on Earth to cool 'em,
'Cause they look just like humans at Kresges and Woolworths.
But decadent brains were at work to destroy.
Brats in battalions were ruling the streets,
Sayin' generation landslide closed the gap between 'em.
And I laugh to myself at the men and the ladies
Who never conceived of us billion dollar babies.
Militant mothers hiding in their basement
Using pots and pans as their shields and their helmets.
Molotov milk bottles heaved from pink high chairs,
While Mothers' Lib burns birth certificate papers.
Dad gets his allowance from his sonny, the dealer,
Who's pubic to the world but involved in high finance.
Sister's out 'til five doing banker's son's hours.
But she owns a Maserati that's a gift from his father.
Stopped at full speed at one hundred miles per hour.
The Colgate invisible shield finally got 'em.
And I laugh to myself at the men and the ladies
Who never conceived of us billion dollar babies.

During his early teens, Tommy James for a group he named The Shondells, which played at events, school dances, and fairs; they eventually made a recording of an old Raindrops song, "Hanky Panky". The local radio stations played it, it became a modest regional hit.
Several years later, a Pittsburg record shop owner was looking to buy up masters of "oldies" songs, to re-release on his own record label. Altho this particular cut wasn't an "oldie", it had the sound and feel of one, and he was able to procure (big word ) it for a few hundred dollars. He made the rounds of the local radio stations to promote it, they gave it a bit of airplay, it became one of the most requested songs, and orders for the record soared over 10,000. The shop owner located Tommy James, flew him to Pittsburgh to help promote the record.
In the summer of 1966 (wow, long time ago ) sales of the record were approaching 100,000, and National distribution was taken over by Roulette Records. Auditions were held for a new band, and the new Tommy James and the Shondells came into being. The rest, as they say, is history.
For you reading pleasure, (NOT Hanky Panky) one of my favs of his:
Draggin' The Line
Makin' a living the old hard way
Takin' and giving by day by day
I dig snow and rain and bright sunshine
Draggin' the line (draggin' the line)

We ain't got much but what we got's ours
We dig snow and rain and bright sunshine

hahaha!..That made me smile! I can totally feel the vibrations cause I always had the speakers blaring.
Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
One of the lesser known of the southern rock bands, and one that often gets little to no airplay, is The Marshall Tucker band. Compared to the Allman Brothers often, they had their own distinctive sound and style. And like Lynyrd Skynyrd, their name was not that of a band member, but of someone from their hometown. Their piano teacher
Hailing from Spartanburg, S.C., (which is where I asked my wife to marry me ) comes The Marshall Tucker band, with one of their nonhits that I like ...
Tell it to the Devil
I can't stand to see a grown man
Hit a little kid
Or get cussed out for somethin'
Not even knowin' what he did
See a man any man
Messin' 'round with your best friend's wife
Or sit helpless in the corner
And watch a man drink away his life
I'm gonna clean up my soul lord
You don't owe me no back pay
I'm gonna tell that to the devil
When I see him today
Walked to a graveyard
May they all rest in peace
I wish they could all go to heaven
I bet two did at least
Someone that don't feel sorry
For the helpless and the blind
Kinda makes you wanna pick up the bible
And memorize every single line
I'm gonna clean up my soul lord
You don't owe me no back pay
I'm gonna tell that to the devil
When I see him today
See a man walk by a beggar
With an empty tin cup
Kinda makes you wanna grab him
By the back of the neck
Knock him down and never pick him up
I'm gonna clean up my soul lord
You don't owe me no back pay
I'm gonna tell that to the devil

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
In the other song of the day thread, I listed "stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel. And I mentioned that they were one of the "one hit wonder groups". That's true enough, but the story doesnt end there. The vocals, and lead guitar on that song, indeed, on the album that Stealers Wheel put out, belonged to Gerry Rafferty. After the legal troubles and financial difficulties and lawyers pretty much put em all at each other's throats, Rafferty went solo with quite a bit of luck in Europe, and several good sellers and hits in America. His success would have been much greater, but he was a bit of a recluse, and didn't like the tour grinds to support albums.
Anyway, a good voice, a good musician and storyteller, off the album City to City, I present the lesser of the two hits:
Right Down the Line
You know I need your love, you got that hold over me
As long as I got your love, you know that I’ll never leave
When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you, woman, right down the line.
I know how much I lean on you, only you can see
The changes that I’ve been through have left their mark on me
You’ve been as constant as the Northern Star, the brightest light that shines
It’s been you, woman, right down the line.
I just wanna say this is my way
Of telling you everything I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday I’m loving you (so much more)
‘Cause you believed in me through my darkest night
Put something better inside of me, you brought me into the light
Threw away all those crazy dreams, I put them all behind
And it was you, woman, right down the line.
I just wanna say this is my way
Of telling you everything I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday I’m loving you (so much more)
If I should doubt myself, if I’m losing ground
I won’t turn to someone else, they’d only let me down
When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you, woman, right down the line.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Well, I admit it, I cheat
In the throwaway bin at the State Hospital Library, I found a book that I decided was too nice to toss
(when I worked there , NOT committed )
Title of the book is
Rock On Vol.2
the Years of Change 1964-1978
copyrighted 1978 (no idea how to make the c for copyright LOL)
by Norm N. Nite
Out of print, but a nice entertaining find. You've been, for the most part, getting songs the same way I read the Bible, close your eyes, open it up, and wysiwyg.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
gotta go look up Norm... I'm sure he dj'd in New York
stay tuned......
yeeeahhhhh, I knew it.... he was on CBS-FM, which was the oldies station created after the death of AM radio... most of the DJ's from 77-WABC found their way there, some of which are listed here from the wiki on 77
"Early 1960s disc jockeys included Herb Oscar Anderson, Charlie Greer, Scott Muni, Chuck Dunaway, and Bob Lewis, but the best known WABC DJs are the ones that followed them in the mid-1960s and beyond: Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, Jim Nettleton, Jim Perry, Dan Ingram, Radio Hall of Fame member "Cousin Brucie" Bruce Morrow, Chuck Leonard, Bob Cruz, Frank Kingston Smith, Roby Yonge, George Michael, and Johnny Donovan. Also heard on WABC was sportscaster Howard Cosell."
great reading on that wiki
"May 10, 1982, the day WABC stopped playing music, is sometimes called "The Day the Music Died". WABC ended its 22-year run as a music station with a 9 a.m.-noon farewell show hosted by longtime WABC disc jockeys Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy. The last song played on WABC before the format change was "Imagine" by John Lennon, followed by the familiar WABC "Chime Time" jingle, then a moment of silence before the debut of the new talk format."

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
I'm sure we can all remember the Edgar Winter Group, the group that brought us such classics as:
Frankenstein, Hanging Around, and Free Ride. Speaking of free ride, it was written by the band's bass player, a fellow by the name of Dan Hartman. Today's pick, from Dan and in memory of him, is:
I Can Dream
No more timing each tear that falls from my eyes
I'm not hiding the remedy to cure this old heart of mine
CHORUS:
I can dream about you
If I can't hold you tonight
I can dream about you
You know how to hold me just right
Moving sidewalks, I don't see under my feet
Climbing up from down here below where the streets see
me lonely for you.
CHORUS
I can dream about you
I'm gonna press my lips against you and hold you tight to me
I can dream about you
You know you got me spellbound what else can it be
Moving sidewalks, I don't see under my feet
Climbing up from the pain in my heart 'cause it's you that I need.
I don't understand it
I can't keep my mind off loving you
Ooo, now baby, I'm caught up in the magic I see in you
There's one thing to do
Rhapsody

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Jeff Healey, leader guitar player and singer of the (you guessed it!) Jeff Healey Band, was born in 1966. At age of one, he was blind, from a rare form of cancer that attacks the eyes. Started playing guitar at age 3, graduated college, and had several hits with his band. The most notable of these was "Angel Eyes", from 1988.
For most of us, other than catching a song on the radio once in a while, our main exposure to him was the movie Road House, he was the singer/bandleader who was friends with Patrick Swayze. Died of cancer on March 2, 2008. Remember for sitting while playing holding the guitar flat on his lap.
In memorium,
"Angel Eyes"
Girl, you're looking, fine tonight,
and every guy has got you in his sights.
What you're doing, with a clown like me,
is surely one of life's little, mysteries
For tonight I'll ask the stars above,
"How did I ever win your love?"
What did I do?
What did I say,
to turn your angel eyes my way?
Well, I'm the guy who never learned to dance,
never even got one second glance
Across a crowded room was close enough,
I could look but I could never touch
For tonight I'll ask, the stars above,
"How did I ever win your love?"
What did I do?
What did I say,
to turn your angel eyes my way?
Don't anyone wake me,
if it's just a dream
'Cause she's the best thing,
ever happened to me
All you fellows, you can look all you like,
but this girl you see, she's leavin' here with me tonight
There's just one more thing that I need to know,
if this is love why does it scare me so?
It must be somethin only you can see,
'cause girl I feel it when you look at me
For tonight I'll ask the stars above,
"How did I ever win your love?"
What did I do?
What did I say,
to turn your angel eyes my way?
hey, hey, hey, yeah, awww

Bonus of the day, since for some piss-ignorant reason they seemed to think it best to shut down during prime time instead fixing the fixes during normal server downtime, is one of the later groups singing a favorite of mine.
Shine, by the group Collective Soul, off their first album (iirc) by the cool name of
Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid
Shine
Give me a word
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find.
What will I find?
Lay me on the ground
Or fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find.
What will I find?
Yeah ... Yeah ... Yeah ... Yeah.
Woah , Heaven let your light shine down (x4)
Love is in the water
Love is in the air
Show me where to look
Tell me will love be there.
Will love be there?
Teach me how to speak
Teach me how to share
Teach me where to go
Tell me will love be there.
Will love be there?
Yeah ... Yeah ... Yeah ... Yeah.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
One of the earliest of the "Supergroups" was Cream. Not a lot to be said,,,, the name pretty much says it all. They *were* the cream of the crop,at their time.
And some of the songs...well, it musta been good stuff
Tales of Brave Ulysses
You thought the leaden winter would bring you down forever,
But you rode upon a steamer to the violence of the sun.
And the colors of the sea blind your eyes with trembling mermaids,
And you touch the distant beaches with tales of brave Ulysses:
How his naked ears were tortured by the sirens sweetly singing,
For the sparkling waves are calling you to kiss their white laced lips.
And you see a girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise,
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea.
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body,
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind.
The tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.
Her name is Aphrodite and she rides a crimson shell,
And you know you cannot leave her for you touched the distant sands
With tales of brave Ulysses; how his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing.
The tiny purple fishes run lauging through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
well, that got good to me, so here's another :
White Room
In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment.
I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.
You said no strings could secure you at the station.
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station.
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.
I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.
At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd.
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten.
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes.
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings.
I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.
Not the whole song, but a good shot of the band
White Room
In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment.
I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.
You said no strings could secure you at the station.
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station.

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Have to do it,,, While i got em in my mind
Crossroad
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please."
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.
Well I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
Run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
And I'm staying at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.
I went down to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above "Have mercy, save poor Bob, if you please."
Mmmmm, standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride
Standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride
Didn't nobody seem to know me, everybody pass me by
Mmm, the sun goin' down, boy, dark gon' catch me here
oooo, ooee, eee boy, dark gon' catch me here
I haven't got no lovin' sweet woman that love and feel my care
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.
You can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.
Lord, that I'm standin' at the crossroad, babe, I believe I'm sinking down.
good one here =)

Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!...I followed those links to both Eric Clapton and John Mayer completely wrapping up the generations : )
Re: The Final song of the Day Thread (sometime)
guess it's age and location.... I hear the phrase 'angel eyes' and this is the song I think of
Shanana, incredibly young and silly
could not find original version anywhere, and the version from the original artist (Curtis Lee) somehow sounded amazingly awful

not an oldie (surprise!) but y'all know how I lub me dem cowboys
John Rich (of Big and Rich)
"I wrote 'Shuttin' Detroit Down' because I watched the news and just about lost it. The CEO of Merrill Lynch took some bail-out money and spent a million dollars remodeling his office, and somewhere in the world found a $38,000 toilet and bought it for his office. I thought, 'Is this what this world has come to?' There's a lack of reality and a lack of respect for American taxpayers. It struck me so hard that I wrote this song. As of right now, it's the fastest-rising single in the history of my career."
My daddy taught me in this country everyone's the same.
You work hard for your dollar and you never pass the blame,
When it don't go your way.
Now I see all these big shots whining on my evening news,
About how they're losing billions and it's up to me and you
To come running to the rescue.
Well pardon me if I don't shed a tear.
their selling make believe and we don't buy that here.
Because in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down,
While the boss man takes his bonus paid jets on out of town.
DC's bailing out them bankers as the farmers auction ground.
Yeah while they're living up on Wall Street in that New York City town,
Here in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down.
Here in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down.
Well that old man's been working in that plant most all his life,
Now his pension plan's been cut in half and he can't afford to die
And it's a crying shame, cus he ain't the one to Blame.
When I looked down to see his calloused hands,
Well let me tell you friend it gets me fightin' mad.
Cause in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down,
While the boss man takes his bonus paid jets on out of town.
DC's bailing out them bankers as the farmers auction ground.
